The Bournville community came together once again this June to celebrate their second annual Bournville Pride event.
Organised by the local Youth Forum, with support from South Weston Activity Network (SWAN) and local housing association Alliance Homes, the event saw hundreds of people gather at Coniston Park to celebrate equality and diversity.
YMCA Dulverton Group, Super Culture, Bournville Policing Team, Jimmy's Café, and North Somerset LGBTQ Forum contributed to the vibrant celebration, which included arts and crafts activities, music, face painting, delicious food, and a bouncy castle, providing entertainment for the entire family.
Event lead organiser and SWAN apprentice, Poppy Lakner, said:
“It’s great to see so many people come together and celebrate Pride. Bournville Pride is an opportunity for us to make all LGBTQ+ people in the community feel safe and represented.”
“We wanted to create an inclusive space where everyone feels welcomed, and where young people can embrace their true selves and know that they belong.”
John Wheatley, Chair of the South Weston Activity Network, added:
“Bournville is a wonderful place to live that is often overlooked by those outside. These young people have created something truly beautiful today, showcasing how vibrant and inclusive our community can be. It is fantastic to see so many local people and organisations coming together to support and celebrate Pride in Bournville.
“This event wouldn’t have happened without the leadership of our young people, like Poppy. It’s been a fantastic day, and we can’t wait to see what this group does next.”
This was echoed by Helen Wheelock, Community Growth Manager at Alliance Homes Group, who said:
“It’s wonderful to see this event go from strength to strength. Seeing so many people of all ages and backgrounds come together to celebrate Pride highlights the strength and inclusivity of this community.
“We’re proud to support this initiative and are inspired by the dedication and leadership shown by these young people. Huge thanks to them for a day filled with smiles and laughter.”
